Offering ticketed concerts is one of the many exciting ways in which we have been expanding our music ministry and living our newly defined mission statement. Our unique facility hosts splendid acoustics in both the Sanctuary and Max Otto Hall, and with each event we continue to explore the ways in which music can Nurture the Spirit, Engage the Mind, and Inspire Action.
On March 19th at 7:30 p.m., we have the privilege to present John Muir – University of the Wilderness, a narrative concert featuring the words of John Muir and the music of the CHANCE Ensemble. In the artful hands of CHANCE, Muir’s words are celebrated, reflected upon, and reinforced by a musical score described a “a place where Celtic, contemporary and classical music beautifully collide.” This program was recently featured on Public Radio International’s “Living on Earth,” and the artists will be embarking on a tour of national parks and monuments shortly after their visit to our sanctuary.
Led by “alternative string Jedi” Ed Willett, the members of the CHANCE ensemble have a history of music making at the highest levels, performing and recording with a staggeringly wide array of musical masters ranging from Herbie Hancock and Rickie Lee Jones to film composer John Williams and conductor Zubin Mehta. Together they’ve shared the bill with some of America’s most revered artists including Willie Nelson, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Leo Kottke, Little Feat, and Glen Campbell. They are one of the few ensembles in music today who devote much of their concertizing to the celebration of the life of John Muir. The CHANCE Ensemble is: cellist Ed Willett, vocalist Cheryl Leah, violinist Liesel Wilson and actor/percussionist Thomas Clyde Mitchell.
