Black People Matter in Children’s RE

By Jen Twente, Children’s RE Chair and Parent

Boy, did we enjoy the conversation in the car on the way home from Black People Matter in RE that Sunday!  It was probably the most details we’ve ever heard about what happened during the class.  We heard all about “the stars”, how the kids did not get to pick the color of their stars, how they were treated so differently based on the color of their star, and that it was SO unfair.   We were glad that the kids felt comfortable asking us questions about “touchy” subjects, and the questions were just flowing: “What does “Systems Error” mean?”,  “Why do I notice…”.  We discussed everyone’s right to be treated as equals and with dignity; having compassion for all people and respecting their experiences and backgrounds; and we discussed our goal of justice for all.

Thank you, First Church, for taking on such current and important subject matter with our children.
