“Are You Running Low on Compassion?”
Speaker: Rev. Dena McPhetres
Music: Jack Forbes Wilson, Artist in Residence
Story: “Lessons from a Spider,” read by Director of Religious Education Beryl Aschenberg
Compassion fatigue is a real condition that can afflict those who work in the helping professions, especially people who witness trauma regularly. Although people of faith trying to do our best to change the world may not technically qualify as being at risk for compassion fatigue, there are times when we run low on compassion. It takes a lot to keep caring and not shut down in the face of all the devastating pain and hurt in the world. How can we cultivate an informed empathy without being overwhelmed? How can we grow a mind and heart of love that is very wide?
