“The Second Coming of Athena. Mentorship in Times of Age and Gender Flux”
Nick Hayes, member
Alissa Rhode, Lead Music Director
Nostalgians long wistfully for a time when wise old men would guide chosen male apprentices toward character, logic, and life skills. But mentoring (and apprenticeship) has never been, and is not now, exclusive to men and boys, nor does it depend on traditional generational boundaries. At a time when this ancient art of teaching leadership appears lost, we can find it right under our nose, in unexpected and inspirational forms.
As a sidebar to a business career, Nick Hayes noted changing patterns in work priorities and free-time use and wondered if they suggested larger social risks and/or opportunities, and wrote the book “Saving Sailing” which explores the value of mentor-led outdoor experiences in the development of the thinking, contributing global citizen.
He was raised at First Church, and, along with wife Angela, raised his kids here too.
