RE Volunteers

Work with First Church children to learn and live our faith!

Over 100 people volunteer each year

in our Religious Education program for children and youth! You are invited and encouraged to join them! Please contact Beryl Aschenberg, Director of Religious Education, for more information.

K5—Seventh Grade Class Leader:

  • Four leaders per class needed.
  • Work with a team to lead class activities.
  • Approximately 1 hour of preparation time needed for each lesson plan.
  • 9-12 Sundays during the year.
  • Attend Teacher Chat Brunch twice per year.
  • Curriculum and support provided; orientation on Monday, August 26 at 6:00 p.m.

Nursery—Seventh Grade Class Assistant:

  • Four assistants per class needed.
  • Welcome children into the classroom and get to know them.
  • Craft, game, or activity preparation.
  • One-to-one assistance to children in need of help or attention.
  • Primary Responsibility: to make it possible for the teacher to TEACH!
  • Once per month.
  • Orientation Monday, August 26 at 6:00 p.m.

Youth (High School) Advisor:

  • Grades 10-12.
  • 5-8 person team.
  • Sundays, 9:00-10:30 a.m.
  • Work in teams of three, with one person taking the “lead” and two assisting.
  • Each advisor commits to15-18 Sundays per church year.
  • Act as “lead advisor” approximately 6 times. Lead advisors are often responsible for determining the content of a particular lesson; Sunday topics/themes are generated by the Youth Steering Committee.
  • Attend Teacher Chat Brunch twice per year.
  • 1-2 extra-curricular events per church year.

Pillars Class Leader:

  • Grades 8-9.
  • Six people needed.
  • Sundays, 9:00-10:30 a.m.
  • Work in two person teaching teams, with one person taking the “lead” and one assisting.
  • Each teacher commits to approximately 8-10 Sundays per church year.
  • Act as “lead teacher” approximately five times. Lead teachers are responsible for determining the content of a particular lesson; broad Sunday themes are primarily generated by the youth.
  • Attend Teacher Chat Brunch twice per year.
  • 1-2 extra-curricular events per church year.

RE Guests:

  • Just a few hours a year, but so helpful!
  • “First Sunday” Leader: Do you have a special interest that ties in with our UU values? Work with RE Committee volunteers to create a one-time “multi-aged” learning experience. Dates to be agreed upon.
  • Create interesting RE-themed bulletin boards two times a year.
  • Musician/Song Leader—two times a year.
  • Photography—two times a year.
  • Videographer—two times a year.
  • Drama/vocal coach for special project.
  • Children’s Chapel speaker or class guest.
  • Lead group art projects.
