“An Invasive Species Update”
Presenter: Ken Solis, Founder of “Weed Out” program with Milwaukee Parks.
Invasive weeds are plants that people have introduced from other areas of the world and subsequently crowd out local vegetation, which can dramatically change the ecology and reduce biodiversity. We will show some common local invasive weeds like garlic mustard, common buckthorn, and others, and how they can dramatically change the landscape. We will discuss control methods and what you can do to try to reduce their impact in your own yard or local park’s natural area.
Ken Solis is a one of the founders and director of the Weed-Out Program, a volunteer effort to preserve and restore Milwaukee County Parks from invasive weeds. His surveys of invasive weeds in over 40 natural areas prompted the park system to develop a natural areas staff to manage these important areas. He has also won several awards from different organizations for his volunteer work in this area.

The Forum — in Max Otto Hall on our second floor — begins at 10:10 a.m. and lasts about 45 minutes. Speakers give a 30-minute presentation, followed by questions and brief comments from the audience. Coffee is served. Childcare is available.
