“Progressive Socialism – for Return of the Common Good?”
Derek Beyer, Founder & President, Democratic Socialists of America – Milwaukee Chapter, believes a return of the common good will happen. He is indeed an inspiration for all of us who hope for a brighter future.
After graduating from Nathan Hale High School in 2000, Beyer served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He got his teaching degree at UW–Milwaukee and works as a teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools. Inspired by the campaign of Bernie Sanders, Beyer became interested in Socialism and studied the career of Frank Zeidler, former Socialist mayor of Milwaukee, credited with cleaning the city of corruption and graft. In 2016, Beyer founded the Milwaukee Chapter of Democratic Socialists of America, with current membership of 250.

Sunday Forum is a Sunday morning lecture series at First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee that showcases provocative, sometimes controversial, speakers discussing topical issues of the day: politics, the environment, health issues, the arts, education and more. The Forum — in Max Otto Hall on our second floor — begins at 10:10 a.m. and lasts about 45 minutes. Speakers give a 30-minute presentation, followed by questions and brief comments from the audience. Coffee is served. Childcare is available.
