Climate Change and the Wicked Problem of Hyperscale Data Centers

David H. Petering-UWM Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Emeritus
Hyperscale data centers house energy-intensive applications of artificial intelligence (AI) such as Chatgpt. Each requires electricity rivaling that of a large city. AI challenges the function of many parts of our society. Similarly, the immense demand of data centers for energy puts at risk society’s efforts to limit climate change. Therein lies the wicked problem of data centers. The intersection of data center proliferation in SE Wisconsin and We Energies’ attempts to meet its responsibilities as an energy utility provide the focus for this presentation. How they interact in Wisconsin models the issues of data centers and energy generation nationwide.

For over 50 years, the Sunday Forum lecture series has showcased provocative, sometimes controversial, speakers discussing topical issues of the day: politics, the environment, health issues, the arts, education, and more. The Sunday Forum is held at 10:00 a.m. September through May. Speakers give a 45-minute presentation, followed by questions and brief comments from the audience. The content of Forum lectures does not necessarily express the viewpoint of First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, but are meant to offer thoughtful topics which our members often pursue further on their own.
