Concerned about the election and where the U.S. is headed? Attend a free showing of It Can’t Happen Here — Again! —  a nationwide celebration of resistance to the movement that could destroy democracy. The 30-minute staged reading will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

In 1936, Sinclair Lewis’ adaptation of his novel It Can’t Happen Here opened on 21 stages in 17 states on Oct. 27, one week before that year’s presidential election as a warning against the rise of fascism in America.

In July 2024, Writers for Democratic Action did readings of a version updated for the 2024 situation across the country, including several in Milwaukee and one at the Waukesha library. The performance, both humorous and alarming, resonated with audience members. Concerned theatre artists are donating their time to bring it back this fall in more locations before the election.

This reading on Sept. 25 by five local artists, including Jim Pickering, will be followed by a conversation about what we need to do to protect democracy.
