Not So Rational After All: A Response to Humanism
April 28, 2024 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Dennis Merritt; Jungian Analyst.
Rev. Michael Schuler, retired senior minister of First Unitarian Society Madison, recently spoke at our Sunday Forum on the topic “Humanism: In Command or Crisis?” based on his new book on humanism. Today’s presentation is a response to Rev. Schuler, particularly with reference to humanism’s emphasis on rationalism. Dr. Dennis Merritt, Milwaukee-based Jungian analyst and ecopsychologist, will explore the powerful realm of the irrational and transcendent as experienced through Big Dreams, vision quests, synchronistic experiences, and the totally random process of consulting the Chinese book of wisdom, the I Ching. He’ll also consider Native American philosopher and writer Vine Deloria, Junior’s statement that Jungian psychology is the best western framework for relating to indigenous spirituality and shamanism. Host: Lorraine Jacobs

For over 50 years, the Sunday Forum lecture series has showcased provocative, sometimes controversial, speakers discussing topical issues of the day: politics, the environment, health issues, the arts, education, and more. The Sunday Forum is held at 10:00 a.m. September through May. Speakers give a 45-minute presentation, followed by questions and brief comments from the audience. The content of Forum lectures does not necessarily express the viewpoint of First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, but are meant to offer thoughtful topics which our members often pursue further on their own.
