The Assange Case and Its Impact on Freedom of the Press
September 15, 2024 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Kevin Gosztola, editor of TheDissenter.org and author of Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange.
A global effort by advocates, campaigners, journalists, organizers, and supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange pushed President Joe Biden’s administration to finally free Assange. But US prosecutors still coerced Assange into pleading guilty to violating the Espionage Act when he engaged in journalism. What is the significance of the US government prosecuting an international journalist with the Espionage Act for all US citizens? What is the impact on our civil liberties? What does the outcome mean for the future of journalism in all of its forms?

For over 50 years, the Sunday Forum lecture series has showcased provocative, sometimes controversial, speakers discussing topical issues of the day: politics, the environment, health issues, the arts, education, and more. The Sunday Forum is held at 10:00 a.m. September through May. Speakers give a 45-minute presentation, followed by questions and brief comments from the audience. The content of Forum lectures does not necessarily express the viewpoint of First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, but are meant to offer thoughtful topics which our members often pursue further on their own.
