January Share The Plate – Victory Garden Initiative

By Dawn Blackmore.

Victory Garden Initiative is our January Share the Plate recipient. Founded in 2009, Victory Garden Initiative’s slogan is “This is a grassroots movement. Move grass. Grow food.” They work to ensure that communities throughout Milwaukee are taught how to grow and enjoy their own food. Their mission is to build “communities that grow their own food, to create a community -based, socially just, environmentally sustainable, nutritious food system for all.”

Through its various programs, Victory Garden Initiative (VGI) aims to build a more socially just and sustainable food system. One of their biggest programs is the Great Milwaukee Victory Garden Blitz. It is the nation’s largest garden building event. Volunteers at VGI help to deliver and install multiple raised garden beds in communities all around Milwaukee. To date, there have been over 4,500 raised beds installed since 2009. This year, the Blitz will be from May 9-23. To learn more about this organization or how you can volunteer for the 2020 Blitz, please visit their website at victorygardeninitiative.org.

Cash collected in the plate will be shared 50/50 between Victory Garden Initiative and First Church. To donate only to VGI, please write a check directly to “Victory Garden Initiative” and we will mail it for you. Parents and guardians, please talk with your children about how even small donations help.
