Our Social Justice Council and Earth Justice Ministry co-sponsored several interconnected events on Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6. Events included a workshop Saturday morning, the Morter Lecture Saturday afternoon and a special service Sunday morning. Lea Morris, songwriter and song leader extraordinaire, was a guest and leader for the Saturday afternoon “songversation” and the Sunday morning service.
Saturday morning, about 20 First Church members and friends gathered at church to reflect on the connections between earth, climate and humanity. We made maps of Milwaukee’s climate and justice challenges and how they are connected. Poverty, a racist prison and legal system, inadequate housing, and gender discrimination all make climate disasters and challenges more difficult for marginalized people. We brainstormed how we might overcome these challenges with love and care and connection — such as church being a resource for community care, developing neighborhood teams, supporting food pantries, and using less fossil fuel.
The Revival Planning Team is meeting to plan follow-up. Watch for announcements.
