Today’s Topic:

The Rev. Dr. Florence Buck was a suffragist, Unitarian minister, educator, advocate for the poor, and director of religious education for the American Unitarian Association (AUA). Rev. Buck progressed in her field despite gender discrimination as one of the first women ministers in America. She had the high honor of being the first woman to preach at Kings Chapel in Boston and was awarded an honorary doctorate at Meadville Lombard Theological School. Her accomplishments would be impressive for any person and considering she did this in a time before women could vote in America and that she navigated it all as a woman – a queer woman at that—is remarkable. Join us as we learn from this important leader’s legacy and explore how her lessons apply to today’s issues.

Rev. Denise Cawley currently serves as Minister at Unitarian Universalist Church West in Brookfield, Wisconsin. She is a graduate of Meadville Lombard Theological School, has served congregations in Oregon and Wisconsin, and provided chaplaincy at Planned Parenthood. She worked in non-profit management for more than 20 years and has been a pivotal player in diversity, inclusion, marriage equality, and voting rights. Rev. Cawley also brings drawing, painting and fiber arts into her ministry.
