Reasonable Ways to Talk about God: Perspectives from World Religions

October 11, 2026 | 9:30 am - 11:00 am
Categories:

Daniel L. Leister, Ph.D., Religious Studies, Professor Emeritus

Alverno College Division of Humanities

This talk is about belief in the existence of gods in various world religions, such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Native American. The speaker will share how these traditions might help people think reasonably about God(s) as a reality, rather than as superstition. The presentation will touch on the function of scriptures, storytelling, rituals, and meditations as they relate to the idea of the divine. The talk will address belief in gods as cultural survival, as experiential and as ever-changing and evolving. Personal insights and reflections of the attendees are a key part of the conversation.

In-Person or Online

In-Person: In Max Otto Hall.

Online: Also available on our YouTube channel.

First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee

For over 50 years, the Sunday Forum lecture series has showcased provocative, sometimes controversial, speakers discussing topical issues of the day: politics, the environment, health issues, the arts, education, and more. The Sunday Forum is held at 10:00 a.m. September through May. Speakers give a 45-minute presentation, followed by questions and brief comments from the audience. The content of Forum lectures does not necessarily express the viewpoint of First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, but are meant to offer thoughtful topics which our members often pursue further on their own.
