John Cudahy: Milwaukee’s Ambassador to Europe
October 20, 2024 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Juliet Hill, First Church Member.
Learn about Patrick Cudahy’s son John, the father of Michael J. Cudahy. Cudahy attended Milwaukee schools and then went out East and back to Madison for graduate school. He had a passion for riding and was a member of the hunt club in what was Granville, North of Milwaukee. That gave him a chance to hunt in Africa for a Milwaukee Public Museum expedition and international experience led him to be one of FDR’s ambassadors to three European countries, until war broke out. He had served in the army in Russia, and worked for his father’s South American ranching and Canadian timber businesses. He was also a journalist and wrote several books, as well as interviewing Hitler before the U.S. Entered World War II. John died suddenly in his fifties when Michael J. was only 18 and spent so little time working in Milwaukee that many people know next to nothing about him.

For over 50 years, the Sunday Forum lecture series has showcased provocative, sometimes controversial, speakers discussing topical issues of the day: politics, the environment, health issues, the arts, education, and more. The Sunday Forum is held at 10:00 a.m. September through May. Speakers give a 45-minute presentation, followed by questions and brief comments from the audience. The content of Forum lectures does not necessarily express the viewpoint of First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, but are meant to offer thoughtful topics which our members often pursue further on their own.
