Saint Jane Doe: The Patron Saint of Clergy Sexual Abuse Survivors

November 6, 2022 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Categories:

Peter Isely, Director of Nate’s Mission, Founder of SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests).

For over three decades survivors of childhood clergy sexual abuse have been revealing a global faith-based system of sexual trauma and institutional cover up in the church. Their witness and testimony require that Christians take a side — either with the fighting community of survivors or with the hierarchy of the church covering up these crimes.

This painful and shocking continual public uncovering of sexual violence in the church has created a necessary crisis of faith for many Christians. A large number have left the church because of it. Those who remain sometimes wonder: Is Christianity worth saving?  This presentation by a survivor informed by thirty years of public activism and advocacy with thousands of victims from around the world, will share his own personal and perhaps surprising answer to this question as well as the current state of this crisis locally, nationally and globally.   Host: Christian Becker

First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee

For over 50 years, the Sunday Forum lecture series has showcased provocative, sometimes controversial, speakers discussing topical issues of the day: politics, the environment, health issues, the arts, education, and more. The Sunday Forum is held at 10:00 a.m. September through May. Speakers give a 45-minute presentation, followed by questions and brief comments from the audience. The content of Forum lectures does not necessarily express the viewpoint of First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee, but are meant to offer thoughtful topics which our members often pursue further on their own.
