What Kind of God Do You Want?
July 4, 2021 | 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Today’s Topic:
God talk has a lot of functions. He (or she) might be described as the creator of the universe, the grand designer; the moral lawgiver; the judge; the shepherd; the martyr; the consoler or the eternal host in a heavenly afterlife.
It is useful to make some of these distinctions as very often a claim about one role is used to justify another. For instance, claims that God is the grand creator somehow morph into assertions that there is an ever present and loving God who monitors our thoughts, words or deeds. Whereas we could equally say that the Earth might be an imperfect prototype abandoned in a corner of the workshop.
We’ll question some of the common functions God(s) might have and the world picture they support.

He spent a year in the USA as an exchange student where he met his sweetheart, now his wife, Elizabeth. He subsequently worked in a variety of fields, including driving a double decker bus and operating the spotlight at an ice show before writing his PhD thesis on the jurisprudence of alternative dispute resolution. He has recently retired as Professor Emeritus after teaching philosophy at Marquette University for 25 years.
