June 3: “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D. Vance
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck. [Description from the publisher HarperCollins]
Sunday, June 24: Annual Book Choosing
Our evolving First Church book group has been meeting for a very long time – well, practically forever – and interested members come for the books they want to discuss. We hope you will join us for this annual “choosing of the books” event and for the discussions to come in the following months.
The Annual Book Choosing meeting will be on Sunday, June 24, at 11:15 after the Sunday service. Everyone is welcome. You are invited to recommend 2 or 3 books which you have read and think will lead to good discussions.
We gather once a month to discuss a chosen book. You can find our book list on the church bulletin board and website. We welcome all readers. For more information, contact Chris Linder.
